(Okay, that was quite a long title o.O)
I played a bit around with Gimp and discovered a way how you can colour your manga scans in a more realistic looking way.
So I thought, why not share it with you? :)

You need:
- Gimp
- a digital manga scan of your choice
- my Gimp tutorial #2 ("How to colour manga scans")

Step 1:
Open Gimp and open the manga scan of your choice. Then follow steps 1 - 6 of my Gimp tutorial #2.

Step 2:
At first, we are going to create shadows to give the picture more depth. Select the layer where only the black outlines of the manga scans are visible (the one with the grey squares) in the toolbox on the right side ("Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo") by clicking on it. Now click "Filters" -> "Light and Shadow" -> "Drop shadow".
When a new window appears, just click "Ok". Gimp will automatically create a new layer with the shadows of the black outlines. You can change the "Opacity" of the layer with the help of the slider bar in the toolbox "Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo". Just play around with it a bit and choose the opacity that you prefer. Remember: the darker you make the shadows, the more dramatic your picture will look.

Step 3:
There are most likely grey squares again all around your picture since Gimp has created the shadow. To remove them, use the tool "Rectangular Selection" from the "Toolbox" on the left side.
Select only the picture with it, not the grey squares, and then click "Image" -> "Crop to Selection".

Step 4:
Create a new layer by clicking "Layer" -> "New Layer" -> select "Transparency" -> "Okay". In the toolbox on the right side, pull the new (transparent) layer under the layer "Drop Shadow".
With this new layer, we will intensify the shadows that are already given in the manga scan. In my example, it's the shadow in Dee's face. Choose a colour that is slightly darker than the one that you used in this area. Now use the Pencil or the Paintbrush to paint out the shadows (but only draw on the new transparent layer! Make sure that you have it selected in the right toolbox).

Step 5:
As a next step, we have to soften the shadow that we have just drawn to make it look more natural.
To achieve this, click "Filters" -> "Blur" -> "Gaussian Blur". In the new window that will appear, you can choose how much you want to smudge your shadows.

Step 6:
After that's done, you can of course change the opacity of the layer with the newly drawn shadows, too. Again, you will notice that the more you increase the opacity, the more dramatic will your picture look.
As soon as you're satisfied with the result, click "File" -> "Save as" and choose a name. Make sure the name of your picture has ".png", ".jpg" or ".gif" in the end, but not ".xcf"!

Step 7:
Done! :D Have fun with your new picture!

And this time, I even have some pictures for you to illustrate the work process:

Whenever I see a good, clear picture of Ted I always want to colour his hair in that lovely red that it was in the anime. <3

Same here! :D
I made a coloured picture of Ted and Dee some days ago and really enjoyed colouring his hair red. I haven't uploaded the pic on LJ (yet), but you can see it here on my Fake fanpage:

Ohhh a fanpage! <3

I am laughing so hard at the Ryo "Not Listening!" image and the Hornball survival sheet. Buahaha. You have a great imagination!

I'm just going to spend the next 20 minutes looking around your site. :-)

The "Not listening!" picture was my favorite self-made image for a long time. :D I'm glad that you like it, too!

Regrettably, the site is far from completed yet. But the basics are there. Maybe I should spend the next 20 minutes (or more) working a bit on it and adding this and that :)

Oh and if you have any ideas what I could add there, feel free to tell me! :)

That "Not Listening" picture makes me smile, because it's almost as if the voice in the back of Ryo's head is going "psst, you might be gay..." and he's going "NOT LISTENING!" with his fingers in his ears.
That's pretty much what happens in the first book.

It looks like a really good start to a site! I'm looking forward to when you add more about the other characters (I like that you quoted Jim in both of Ryo and Dee's character profiles, I really like Jim, I think he's lovely, I want to play with his hair!).

That icon is beautiful and so sweet <3

Haha you're right, I've never interpreted the picture like that! But it makes totally sense. xD

I like Jim too, he's a really cool dude. When he appeared for the first time in the manga, he impressed me immediately by how quickly he understood the relationship between Ryo and Dee and what makes them tick. If I ever met him, I would probably be a bit scared that he could maybe read my thoughts or something, lol.

I'm quite content with how this picture turned out, too. :) Originally, it was just a little Gimp practice to remember the exact steps for my tutorial, but it ended up quite beautiful.

I like the way Jim is able to laugh and tease Dee (season 2) about how he'll do anything for Ryo (telling him he should go straight home because Ryo told him to). The way he finds the idea of Dee doing as he's told very amusing. When they first meet and he just laughs and laughs at Dee makes me grin.

Somehow he seems to be the only one Dee doesn't get annoyed at for this.

In season 2 I laughed when he was talking about the victim being "splattered all over the place". Is that your professional opinion Jim?!

I'd love to meet Jim, I think i'd enjoy his sense of humor. Maybe I should get a Jim icon?!

"When they first meet and he just laughs and laughs at Dee makes me grin."
I laughed so hard when I read that scene for the first time! xD And I can totally identify myself with Jim there because I'm also one of those people who have problems to stop once they start laughing. :D

Jim is most likely a very funny guy to spend time with. I wonder if he's ever in a bad mood?

If he's able to make weird comments about dead kids being splattered everywhere then I think there probably isn't much that could upset him. Although I work with lots of Police Officers and they often use humour to make the job less horrible at times.

I'd like to go for coffee with Jim.

Haha true!

How come that you work with police officers? (Well I'd understand if you don't want to speak about your job here, but I'm just curious)^^
