I'm setting myself a challenge: Starting today, I'll try to write a short drabble each day! At least until the Easter holidays, maybe even longer, we'll see. As you can probably imagine, they will mostly be about FAKE, but maybe I'll include some cross-overs or other fandoms as well. Speaking of which, I started watching Torchwood yesterday! I know that many FAKE-fans are also Torchwood-fans, so I thought, why not give it a try? And what can I say, I really like it so far! :)
But now, let's move on to the first drabble...

Drabble #1 - Ball Night

Characters/Pairings: Dee/Ryo
Warnings: None
Timeline: After Volume 7
Spoilers: None

To Dee, the only good thing about the annual ball nights of the NYPD was seeing Ryo in a tux. Apart from that, it was always about making conversation with people he didn't like, dancing with women he didn't love, and listening to some lame old music. Thank God the ball was finally, finally over now! Most of the guests had left already, but there was still some classic music playing softly in the background.

Dee leaned back in his chair with a sigh and downed the rest of his champagne. He was waiting for Ryo so they could finally go home.

And then, suddenly, Ryo was standing right in front of him in the almost empty ballroom. His hair and skin glowed warmly in the candle light as he extended his right hand toward Dee. "May I have this dance?"

Maybe tonight wasn't that bad after all.

(Author's Notes: When I imagine Ryo and Dee dancing, I always see Ryo as the Lead, maybe even teaching Dee how to dance. It's such a cute mental image! :3 )

Gorgeous, I could see this in my head. And I think you're right, Ryo would lead =)

Yes, and Dee would complain at first about being pushed into the female role, even though he doesn't really mind :D
Thanks for your feedback! (I totally have to draw a scene like that someday...)

Definitely! I'd love to see it!

Also, good luck with your challenge, I know you can do it!

(And hope you enjoy Torchwood - though you should be warned the third season, Children of Earth, bears no resemblance to the first two and unless you like grim, unrelenting hopelessness it's best ignored, lol! I saw it once but now I pretend it never happened.)

Alrighty! By the way, it was you who inspired me to do daily drabbles. It always impresses me when I see how many drabbles you have already written!

Okay, thanks for the warning! But maybe I'll give it a try anyway :'D By the way, how many seasons does Torchwood have? And is the series already finished or are there more seasons to come in the future?

*grins* I keep amazing mysow many I've written, considering I believed for a long time that I could never write drabbles. Now I've posted over 300 and I have another 90 or so already written awaiting posting. Guess I was wrong, lol!

There are technically 4 seasons and I'm really hoping there won't be any more since everything I liked about Torchwood was destroyed by halfway through season three. There are the first two series, fun and a little cracky, not taking themselves too seriously. Then there's Children of Earth, a 5 part mini-series. The script wasn't written for Torchwood, but no one would make it so the Torchwood team (what was left of it) was shoehorned into a pre-existing script, which is why the characters are out of character. Then there's Miracle Day, also not originally a Torchwood script, which transfers the action to America with a bunch of new and mostly dislikeable or unmemorable characters along with Gwen and Jack, who are all that's left of the Torchwood team by that time. I never liked Gwen anyway, and she was made the main character so I didn't bother watching. I read the episode synopses and it sounded awful, so that's 10 hours I didn't waste. Well, that's my opinion (although there are a lot of other fans of the first two series who agree). Maybe you'll enjoy it, who knows?

Speaking about drabbles, do you have a certain rule you stick to, like a maximum word count? Because I often have a little trouble keeping my drabbles short and I'm wondering just how long might TOO long... But there doesn't seem to be a clear definition that distinguishes between drabbles and oneshots :/

Well I'm okay with Gwen, but now you've made me curious about the out-of-character-seasons... Maybe I'll watch them just to see how badly the scripts screw up Torchwood :'D Although of course it's sad that they do.
Anyway, as soon as I'm through with the 4 seasons (or maybe just the first two), I think I'll start reading Torchwood-Fanfiction as well. I don't dare to start now right away because I'm scared of spoilers xD

Oh, and another question regarding drabbles, how do you always find so many topics to write about? I mean, I have lots of ideas right now, but I'm not sure if I could come up with something new daily for such a long time...

A proper drabble is 100 words exactly, no more and no less. It takes a while to get used to editing down to the required word count, but it does force the writer to look at different ways of phrasing things and to decide what is essential and what can be left out. I use Microsoft Word as my word processor and the word count tool there helpfully counts contractions (it's, don't, etc.) as 1 word instead of 2, so that helps with getting the right word count. Only 4 times in my drabbling career ave I written something that has come out at exactly 100 words first try, with no editing, but it's a thrill when that happens.

I belong to a drabble community, specific to Torchwood, that gives out a new prompt every week or two, so I have that to work with. In between times, I get prompts from friends, or I look at song titles. Then there's a community on dreamwidth called dailyprompts, where there's a new prompt almost every day, so I'll sometimes use that.

Here's a prompt for you - Ryo, Ice Cream.

See if you can do something with that!

Once you've seen the first two seasons, you could check out the community tw_classic where only fics about the first two series are allowed. Most people warn for spoilers anyway, if you check the headers on their fics. Enjoy!

Oh dear, I didn't know that... I've done one or two 100-words-drabbles already, but not more :'D
I always use OpenOffice Writer, which apparently can't count words properly - it said 100 words when it were really only 97 (and there was only one "it's", too, so that couldn't be the reason).

Anyway, thanks for the prompt! I just made a drabble about that one, maybe you've already seen it :) And I'll definitely check out dailyprompts! I like working with song titles, too, but in my experience, song title drabbles quickly become repetitive...

I've been using the Billboard top 100 charts off and on. I don't know most of the songs, and I don't listen to them, I just wait to see what inspiration I get from the title alone and so far they've been a very varied bunch. I've also been using episode titles from a long-running British sitcom, because some of the the titles are so insane. It was a prompt on tw100 that ran for a month. I wrote 33 drabbles from it then, but there were so many episode titles that I didn't get to use that I've gone back to it for further inspiration.

I've seen and commented on your new drabble, and I loved it =D

Maybe I should write some FAKE drabbles.... Hmmm, I could do a FAKE drabble files collection to run alongside my Torchwood one....

That sounds like fun, which sitcom did you use? :D

Well, if you manage to write drabbles for both Torchwood and FAKE, I certainly won't complain! ;D I'm always having trouble when I try to be active in two fandoms...
But yay for FAKE drabbles!! ^_^
Mar. 13th, 2014 03:47 pm (UTC)
It's called Last of the Summer Wine. this is a link to a list of all the episodes (there are some pretty way out titles)

I'll have to see if I can do an occasional FAKE drabble then, just for fun. Not sure I can count FAKE drabbles in my drabble total for the year, lol!

I'll still be primarily a Torchwood writer, but...
